This is a form of capture sharpening designed to offset the softness created by our cameras and lenses. Which brings us to “ deconvolution” sharpening. "I'm OK with that, but you're still going to need a rechargeable battery or some form of energy to power this vehicle, and the initial investment in a maglev infrastructure for the car would be substantial." The only vehicles that would benefit from such an infrastructure investment would be the hover cars themselves-wheeled vehicles running on combustion engines or batteries would still need well-maintained roads.Īs imaginative as the VW hover car is, Holguín-Veras says, mass transit is still the best option for urban populations in the future as city populations swell and traffic congestion grows. "You could argue that, because there's less friction, the hover car would be more efficient than fuel-powered vehicles with tires, brakes and other mechanism," says José Holguín-Veras, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic University. Of course, for VW's hover car to work in practice, it would have to cost less to run than an ordinary car, and experts question whether that is possible in the foreseeable future. To add a bit of realism in one scene, a discarded can in the roadway rolls away from the car as it passes by. The narrator points out a number of the imaginary car's features, including a joystick controller, auto-pilot, and a collision-avoidance sensor. In the video, Jia's parents take the wheel-shaped hover car out for a spin through Chengdu. As portrayed in the video ( see below), the vehicle would be about two meters in diameter and about 1.5 meters wide. "We built a one-quarter scale model of the car and used a bit of creative filmmaking to show how it would work," Loasby says. In their video, Volkswagen designers envision a scenario where magnetic iron rock or ore beneath Chengdu help create the car's levitation alternatively, the minerals could be mined and mixed in with the tarmac. ![]() What keeps maglev vehicles from gaining widespread use is the need to set up an infrastructure of electromagnetic rails and roads. Magnets on board and in the track lift the train between eight and 12 millimeters, depending on how much electrical current is used. (Other maglev trains use electromagnetic forces for propulsion without actually lifting the train off the ground.) The Shanghai Maglev Train has been ferrying passengers since 2004 on a 30-kilometer line between Pudong International Airport and the city's outskirts at speeds of up to 430 kilometers per hour. ![]() The imaginary car stays aloft with the aid of magnetic levitation, much the way some maglev trains travel along special rails using electromagnetic suspension. "It was the ultimate in dreaming because a full-scale version of the car doesn't exist." "We put a concept together, including a video depicting how it would function," he adds. Jia sent sketches of a levitating car that could be maneuvered easily in a downtown setting, says Simon Loasby, head of design at Volkswagen Group China. Wang Jia, a student and resident of Chengdu in the country's Sichuan province, chose the latter, envisioning a two-person environmentally-friendly hover car. Participants were able to tinker with designs on a Web site that Volkswagen set up for that purpose, or they could upload their own designs. A year ago, Volkswagen in China launched a marketing campaign called The People's Car Project (PCP), which invited Chinese customers to submit ideas for cars of the future. But curriculum would be counted in another category, “instructional staff services,” funded at $514 per student, if it’s part of support given to staff who are developing lessons, the statistical agency says. The money spent on curriculum is counted in the “instruction” category if it’s purchased curriculum, NCES explained in an email. Spending on instruction includes not only salaries and benefits for teachers and aides, notes the agency, but also instructional materials and services that school officials contract to purchase. Instruction is defined by NCES as including “activities dealing directly with the interaction between teachers and students.” It can include instruction that occurs online, and outside the classroom: The biggest individual spending category by far is “instruction,” at $6,821 per student annually-or 61 percent of all current spending. NCES also breaks down school spending by specific categories within the overall costs of salaries, benefits, purchased services, and supplies. Per-student spending hit its highest point in 2008-09 at $11,699, and then fell every year until 2012-13, when it stabilized and grew slightly, as the economy began to climb out of the financial hole left by the Great Recession. ![]() The buying of supplies, which NCES says covers everything from textbooks to heating oil, consumes 8 percent of district budgets. Recently released federal data provide clarity on what’s generally known about the huge amount of money in districts that’s consumed by the salaries and benefits of teachers, administrators, and support staff. The University of Texas at Austin dug on the southeast spur of the plateau and excitedly revealed another phase of occupation during the 6th century BC. ![]() This finding alludes to commercial or craft activity in a crossover space where the Greek and non-Greek spheres collided. Hundreds of containers, amphorae and pithoi, were found in what could be a storage or warehouse facility where it is likely that an indigenous elite managed this mixed activity. The Oenotrian phase sprawled from the 9th century BC until the beginning of the 7th century BC. Despite previous excavation, Incoronata has proven there is still much to be revealed. These investigations were led by University of Milan, Soprintendenza Archeologica della Basilicata, University of Texas at Austin, University of Rennes 2, and now very recently also included McMaster University. Incoronata’s vast body of growing research has been carried out by various groups on different spurs of the hill since the 1970s. Incoronata has provided a rich record of interactions during the 8th and 7th century BC between indigenous Oenotrians and Aegean Greeks, well before the neighbouring apoikia of Metaponto was founded. The Metaponto team extensively used drone technology to map out the area with high-resolution aerial imagery of the landscape. Spencer Pope began excavation.Īround 7.5 kilometres from the coast of Basilicata, the plateau site of Incoronata sits 60 metres above sea level overlooking the Basento river valley. In July 2019, after two previous seasons of surveying and gathering GPS data at a site called Incoronata in Metaponto, a team of undergraduates, graduates, and professional collaborators led by Dr. Project illustrator Miranda Siklenka matches fragments to known pottery types. Archaeologists conduct careful collection and analysis of the evidence and then it gets documented. If you dig deep enough to reveal ancient Metapontum, you will find it is rich with indigenous and Greek context regarding their earliest dynamics. What remains on the surface are modern towns like Metaponto. By the early eighth century BC, droves of Greek merchants were sailing the coasts of Western Italy forming proto-colonial contact, leading to trade posts and eventually permanent settlements.
